We Know What Clean Is !!!

Upholstry -- How We Do It

Fine Fabric & Upholstery

Often times it seems that while the floors get vacuumed, the tile gets mopped and the counters are wiped down; the upholstery in our homes is simply overlooked. Take a quick glance around your home and think about the last time that your sofa, loveseat or favorite recliner was cleaned by a professional. For many folks the answer is never.

Upholstered furniture is commonly the most popular seating in a home and over time, dirt and residue from clothing, pets and dust in the air are deposited on upholstery. Cheerios falling from little hands get crushed on the cushions, while comfortable jeans bring in a little dust from the garden and end up lounging on the couch.

The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration recommend that upholstery be cleaned by a certified professional every 12 to 24 months, depending on the use and soiling of the surface. However, routine care of upholstered furniture in between visits from Select Floor Care is of the utmost importance to the lifespan of your pieces.

How Do I Keep it Clean?

While vacuuming the carpet, take time to use the wand attachment and gently vacuum the upholstered surfaces in your home as well. Keeping tabs on surface dirt and contaminants will help avoid severe soiling that could endanger the original color, texture and quality of the upholstery.

Accidental spills should be cleaned immediately by soaking up the remaining liquid and treating stains with following the tips and tricks found on our Water Based Stain Guide, Coffee, Tea or Urine Stain Guide, or Greasy Stain Guide.

When Should I Call Select Floor Care?

If you’re unsure of the last time that your upholstery was cleaned, or if it’s time to schedule a cleaning with Select Floor Care, we recommend that you take the time to conduct a quick experiment.

  • Place a clean, dark colored napkin over the wand or upholstery attachment of your vacuum cleaner.
  • With the vacuum turned on, place the wand and napkin on upholstery and hold it in place for 60 seconds.
  • Turn the vacuum off, remove the napkin and look to see if you notice any discoloration on the napkin.
  • If so, your upholstery is soiled and ready for a visit from Select Floor Care.

That Can’t Be!

If upholstery has been neglected over a long period of time, it’s not uncommon for the piece of furniture to take on a whole new color. When this loveseat arrived in our facility, it appeared to be a beige color. However, once Barry put his Master Textile Cleaner skills to work, it quickly became apparent that the dark color was not dyed at the factory…But by dirt!

Although cases like this one are due to extreme soiling, they’re not uncommon. Ideally, we’re able to work with our clients before extreme soiling takes place. Regular, scheduled cleanings will help ensure that you get your money’s worth from the furniture in your home. Dirt left to sit on upholstery over time will work itself into the fibers and cause the color and texture to break down, leaving you with pieces that look old and worn far beyond their time.

If your couch is taking on a new hue, don’t wait any longer to give us a call. Upholstery cleaning is like treating your living room to a mini-makeover for a far lesser expense than the price of new furniture!

How We Clean Sofas, Love Seats, Recliners, Dining Room Chairs, Ottomans, Wingback Chairs, etc.

  • Identify fibers for possible dye bleed or loss and at the same time verifying upholstery is not hydrophobic.
  • Fibers that are color stable and not hydrophobic are lightly misted with a fine and delicate fabric pre-spray to begin to loosen attached soil.
  • A white terry cloth towel is used to massage in pre-spray to help in preparing fabric for soil extraction.
  • Warm water flushing is now performed over all accessible areas with a special attention to know dirt harboring areas such as arm rests, head rests and foot rests.
  • A final clean cloth wipe down is done to insure soil has been properly removed.  If any soil persists, a repeat of steps 2 through 5 are repeated until clean product is the result.
  • Optional fabric protection should be applied to help guard against spills and accidents.
