We Know What Clean Is !!!

Pet Odor & Stain Options

As pet owners, we understand that “accidents” are a part of life. Whether potty training a new puppy, or the aging bladder of an old friend is causing unexpected puddles or piles; there’s a right way and a wrong way to properly deal with the clean-up.

“Spot” Cleaning

When a pet accident occurs, begin the clean-up by removing any solids and soaking up wet spots by covering them in a generous layer of baking soda. Once the baking soda has absorbed the liquid and dried, remove it using a spatula or by vacuuming.

We strongly recommend against attempting to clean the spot by soaking it with water or liquid cleaners

Well, Why Can't I Use Liquid Cleaner?

Soaking an area with liquid that has been soiled by pet urine will only allow the contaminant to soak deeper into the fibers of your carpeting. Often, instead of cleaning, liquid cleaners and water will combine with the remaining urine and soak through your carpet’s backing, padding and onto the subfloor.

Depending on the volume of urine released and other liquids used in the cleaning process, a spot of urine that appears to be only 2” in diameter on the surface may have spread to nearly 8” in diameter by the time the liquid reaches the subfloor! How? When your carpet is exposed to liquids, they spread horizontally through the carpet fibers, and subsequent layers of padding beneath.

There is no simple way to repair or reverse the damage caused by pet urine soaking through your carpeting, and long term effects may include staining and undesirable odors.

Speaking of Odors…

Typically, pet urine is highly acidic and, well, stinky. Once urine has soaked through carpeting, the potential exists for odors to permeate subfloors, tack strip and any other porous wood surface within the vicinity of an accident.

Did you know that just a tablespoon of urine, left to soak in carpet, is enough to make an entire room smell? And unfortunately, many pets with bladder control issues will repeatedly urinate in the same area, causing an increased potential for that unmistakable, unpleasant and simply undesirable smell.

…And What About Stains?

The same acidic properties that cause pet urine to be so odorous, also aid in producing persistent stains. Carpet is initially dyed at the factory using an acid-based dye. When a pet urinates on the carpeting, they’re essentially releasing their own special color of acid dye onto the carpet, as well, causing stubborn stains.

Consumer and professional cleaning products are designed specifically not to remove the acid dyes that give carpet its coloring, thus making acid-based pet stains difficult to remedy without the proper professional help.

Never Fear…Select Floor Care is Here to Help!

If you have an ongoing issue with pet accidents, call us today to set-up an in-home consultation to discuss restorative measures for your carpeting. Typically, the cleaning process begins by locating the location of the pet accidents, and flooding the area with a hot solution containing a professional-grade neutralizer. After a soaking period, the solution is removed using specialized tools to extract the cleaning agent, and odor from the floor.

Barry and Michelle have a vast amount of experience in pet “clean-up” and can help chart a course of action to restore your carpet the right way. Don’t be embarrassed by your pet urine issues, or hesitate to call. Every doggy pees…We understand!
