Our deep rug cleaning begins with the dry soil removal process, to remove the dirt, sand and abrasive contaminants that will ultimately cause damage to the individual fibers of the rug. Each rug client actually gets to see the dry soil that is removed from their rug! Then the rugs are ready for the traditional rug wash, then drying and fringe cleaning!
Can you tell the difference between a machine made versus a hand tied oriental rug?
Tip… Look closely at the lines on the back, the ones that run across the width. If they are perfectly uniform, it’s probably a machine made rug. If they are a little wavy or vary in thickness, it’s probably hand tied. Still can’t tell? Bring it in and we can help!
Here at Select Floor Care we often see rugs whose owners have become frustrated with the wear of the fringes and have given into the temptation to cut off the fringes. Unfortunately, most people aren’t familiar with the importance of rug fringe and are causing far more damage to their floor furnishing than they realize!
The Importance of Rug Fringe & Knots
In hand knotted and woven rugs, the fringes are the very foundation of your rug! Hand knotted rugs are comprised of tiny symmetrical knots tied to a foundation of “Warp” and “Weft” yarns. Weft yarns run from left to right. The Warp yarns run lengthwise, beginning at the bottom of the rug. The area between where the fringes end and the pile of the rug begins is called the “Kelim.”
The small knots on the fringe of a rug are the tools that hold the Weft, or horizontal yarns of the rug, in place. The absence of these knots, caused by the removal of fringe, will lead to fraying and shrinkage of the rug as the Weft yarns are free to slide off of the rug’s horizontal, or Warp, yarns.
Think about a string of beads. If someone removes the knot at the end of the string, beads will simply begin falling off, one by one. Removing the fringes and knots of your rug has the same effect, as Weft yarns are free to slide loose. Depending on the extent of the damage, the rug may become irreparable.
But, My Rug Fringe is…Old.
As homeowners ourselves, we understand that the fringes of rugs collect dirt and lose the luster of their initial bright, vibrant color as they endure traffic from children, pets and guests. However, fringes aren’t like hair. Once they’re cut off, they’re gone forever, leaving your rug to unravel and ruining your investment.
In the event that the fringes of your rug are beyond the repair of a thorough cleaning, they can be replaced. The process, however, should be guided by a rug care expert. In replacement scenarios, the old fringe is secured behind the rug (not cut off!) and new fringes are sewn onto the Kelim of the rug.
